When David first met Susan in the spring of 1982, he had exactly $47 in his checking account, an old pickup truck that barely started, and a dream of building a life with someone who believed in him.
Susan wasn't looking for a rich man.
She wasn't looking for a perfect man.
She was looking for a good man.
Their first date wasn't at a fancy restaurant.
It was at a small local diner where they split a cheeseburger because neither of them had enough money for two meals.
David apologized.
Susan laughed and said,
"One burger tastes just as good when you share it."
That was the moment David knew.
She was the one.
They got married less than a year later.
Friends wished them well.
But behind their backs, many people whispered the same thing.
"They'll never make it."
Life tested them almost immediately.
Bills piled up.
Their old car broke down.
The roof leaked every time it rained.
David worked construction during the day and stocked shelves at a grocery store at night.
Susan cleaned houses while raising their first child.
There were weeks when they worried more about paying the electric bill than buying birthday presents.
Still...
Every night before going to bed, they held hands.
No matter how tired they were.
No matter how frustrated they felt.
No matter how difficult the day had been.
Years passed.
Their family grew.
There were graduations.
Birthday parties.
Christmas mornings.
Little League games.
School concerts.
Sunday barbecues.
And thousands of ordinary moments that slowly became extraordinary memories.
Then came the hardest season of all.
After thirty-one years of marriage, Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Everything changed overnight.
David drove her to every doctor's appointment.
He learned how to cook.
He cleaned the house.
He sat beside her during every treatment.
When Susan lost her hair, she cried.
David quietly walked into the bathroom...
Picked up his electric razor...
And shaved his own head.
When she asked why, he smiled.
"I never wanted you to fight this battle alone."
She says that was the day she fell in love with him all over again.
Several years later, life tested them once more.
David suffered a serious heart attack.
This time, Susan became his strength.
She encouraged him through every therapy session.
She reminded him to keep believing.
She celebrated every small victory.
Just as he had done for her.
Today...
More than 43 years later...
They still drink coffee together every morning.
They still hold hands while watching television.
They still dance in the kitchen whenever their favorite old song comes on.
Someone recently asked David,
"What's the secret to staying married for over four decades?"
He smiled...
Looked at Susan...
And answered,
"Love isn't something you find once. It's something you choose every single day."
"Some days it's easy."
"Some days it's hard."
"But every morning you wake up and choose the same person again."
Susan added something even simpler.
"The happiest marriages aren't made of perfect people."
"They're made of two imperfect people who never stop showing up for each other."
In a world where so many things are temporary...
A love that lasts a lifetime is still one of life's greatest blessings.
